Automated vacuuming just became, well, a lot more automated with the iRobot Roomba i7+ and its accompanying 7550 dock. Instead of emptying a small bin one or more times a day by hand, this robotic vacuum system does it for you, collecting dirt in a sizable bag-equipped dock.

The automatic dirt disposal clean base isn’t the only exciting feature on this robot vacuum. The Roomba i7+ is packed full of advanced navigation technology. iRobot paired its iAdapt 3.0 software with vSLAM technology to help it learn and remember each room of your house. Imprint Smart Mapping displays a map on the robot’s smartphone app (Yep, the robot vacuum is Wi-Fi enabled too).
In addition to an app that lets you customize the map, set a schedule and receive alerts, you can give the i7+ voice commands through Alexa or Assistant. Voice control is a great option to have when you’re busy cooking, or your hands are full.
The mechanics of the robot vacuum are equally as impressive as its technological features. Two rubber brushrolls along with extra-strong suction enhance the robot vacuum’s pickup power without getting bogged down by wound hair. Inside of the rinsable bin, there is a high-performance filter that reduces airborne allergens like dust and dander.
iRobot also includes a dual-mode barrier that keeps the robot from crossing an invisible line or entering a protected, virtual halo. Plus, the lithium-ion battery promises a runtime that’s long enough to clean a spacious home in one day.
Dirt-Disposing Dock
For a robotic vacuum’s dirt bin, a 10-ounce capacity is more than decent. However, you don’t need to empty the i7+’s rinsable bin when it gets full. iRobot designed this robot vacuum to scoot to the 12-by-15-inch dock as soon as the bin needs to be emptied. Once it’s on the dock, the 19-inch tower on the dock suctions the bin’s contents into a disposable bag, which can hold approximately 300 ounces of dirt. This reduces manual-dumping frequency to about one time per month.
The bag has a locking tab to keep dirt from flying out when you remove the bag from the tower. You don’t have to worry about remembering to replace the bag – The smartphone app gives you full-bag reminders. Every i7+ package comes with two extra bags, so you don’t have to buy a disposable bag for the first three months of ownership.

iAdapt 3.0 Navigation
The Roomba i7+ relies on integrated infrared sensors to dodge stairs and obstacles. However, the robot also has an embedded camera that’s linked to its iAdapt 3.0 Navigation technology. With these two components, the robot can map an entire level of your home at a time. The robot vacuum is also equipped with vSLAM technology, which learns and remembers where landmarks like furniture are located, so the robot can adapt its movements as necessary and avoid cleaning the same spot twice.
Imprint Smart Mapping
Once the i7+ learns its way around your house, Imprint Smart Mapping creates a floor plan. Thanks to the high storage capacity of the robot’s RAM, the Roomba i7+ can memorize as many as ten different floor plans.
iRobot HOME App
All this technology is controllable and customizable via the iRobot HOME app. Once the robot makes its first pass around your house, the Android and iPhone-compatible app will display a map, which is color-coded according to areas cleaned and not-yet cleaned.
The Imprint Smart Mapping technology that builds the map also allows you to customize the map by splitting a room, merging two rooms or labeling each room. You can even select which rooms you want the robot to vacuum by tapping them on a checklist.
Programmed scheduling is another convenience feature that will make life easier. With the app, you can set a daily, weekly, or day-by-day schedule. The HOME app also gives you on-demand statistics, including total cleaning time, charging time, square footage vacuumed, and number of times the bin was emptied.

A Two-Way Virtual Barrier
With the Roomba i7+ robot vacuum, you get a dual-mode virtual wall barrier. The battery-operated tower can be used in one of two ways. One setting draws an invisible line up to 10 feet that the robot won’t cross. A flip of the barrier’s switch forms an invisible halo. Every object inside of the 4-foot halo is untouchable by the robot vacuum.
Voice Commands
Your phone isn’t handy? No problem. You can utilize your home’s Wi-Fi network and give the Roomba i7+ voice commands if you own an Alexa or an Assistant device. Tell the robo vac to go to the dock, start a cleaning session, or pause in place.
Onboard Controls
On the black-and-charcoal faceplate of the robot vacuum, there are three buttons – start, dock, and spot clean. Unlike the raised push buttons on previous models, the i7 Roomba’s chrome controls are chrome touch controls. Obviously, onboard controls are not innovative, but the fact that they are touch buttons lends to the robot’s overall sleek appearance.
High-Powered Suction
iRobot boasts a three-point cleaning system on many of its Roombas, and the i7+ is no exception. The first point in this system is the robot vacuum’s suction. In comparison to the Roomba 600 AeroVac robot vacuum cleaners, the i7+’s suction is ten times more powerful, which means its 7-inch-wide inlet can handle lightweight and heavy debris like a champ. The robot even has a dirt-detect sensor that automatically increases the robot’s suction strength in high-traffic and extra-dirty areas.
Rubber Extractors and a Side Brush
The other two points of the i7+’s cleaning system are the pair of rubber extractors and one side brush. The two extractors, or brushrolls, are made of rubber, reducing the likelihood of tangled hair. Another benefit is their flexibility. Since they are made of bendable rubber, the two brushrolls come in close contact with the surface of your floors.
While one brushroll loosens stubborn debris, the grooved brushroll lifts the debris. As these two rubber brushrolls turn toward each other, a propeller-style side brush whisks dirt away from wall edges and helps collect more dirt on the floor. For your convenience, iRobot gives you a replacement side brush to have on hand.
Allergen Filtration
Whether you suffer from allergies or have pets in your house, the i7+ has you covered. iRobot added a thick, pleated filter to the bin. This high-performance filter is able to capture dust, dander, pollen, and other allergens. After the first filter wears out, you don’t have to order more filters because iRobot throws in an extra filter.
A Sturdy Size
The iRobot Roomba i7+ robot vacuum is certainly not flimsy. It stands 3.6 inches tall and measures 13.3 inches wide. As far as weight is concerned, the robot is manageable. Weighing 7.4 pounds, you’ll have no problem toting the robot vacuum upstairs to clean the second story of your home.
On the underside, you’ll notice two wheels. Since the wheels are treaded and not smooth, they can easily grip hard floors and plow through carpet fibers. Due to their large size, the wheels can transition from bare floors to carpets without hesitating or struggling.
An Hour-Plus Runtime
In any type of cordless vacuum, the quality of the battery directly impacts the vacuum’s runtime. Inside of the i7+, there is a 14.4-volt lithium-ion battery pack, which is the crème de la crème of rechargeable batteries. With its 3,300 mAh capacity, the battery provides 75 minutes of vacuuming time for the robot.
The time it takes the battery to recharge is impressive too. In just 3 hours, the battery level goes from 0 to 100 percent. Of course, before the battery is fully depleted, the robot travels and connects to the dock. Once the battery is recharged, the robot resumes vacuuming where it stopped.

iRobot Sets the Bar High
iRobot’s inclusion of an automatic bin emptying system instantly puts the Roomba i7+ a few steps ahead of its competitors by addressing a common complaint among robot vacuum owners. We were also impressed by the dual brushrolls that flex for a close clean.
Then, there is all the navigation technology. From landmark memorization to multiple-map recall, the i7+ makes the most use of every cleaning session. iRobot offers a ton of controls on the HOME app – the customizable color-coded map is our favorite app function. Of course, the robot’s virtual assistant compatibility is also worth mentioning.
Several other features deserve a nod, such as the micro-allergen filter. The battery goes the distance by providing a 75-minute runtime. Auto docking and auto resume minimize the need for you to intervene after the robot vacuum charges.
Like any other appliance, the iRobot Roomba i7+ has a few downsides. The dock is rather large, so you’ll need to pick a spacious spot to set up the base. There is only one side brush; two side brushes would extend the robot’s coverage. However, both of these issues are minor, considering the massive and advanced vacuuming power of this robot vacuum. Combined, the iRobot Roomba i7+ and the 7550 dock elevate the convenience of robotic vacuuming to new heights.
