Why You Should Rename Your Roomba
Why not? It’s always entertaining to hear Assistant or Alexa call out a funny name in their serious tones. Plus, naming your Roombas will really help you distinguish one from the other. If you have two Roombas on two floors, Alexa can get their default names (Roomba) mixed up. This won’t happen if you give each robot a bit of personality.

Don’t worry about gender pronouns and whatnot. Roombas are genderless robots, although most people associate Roombas with the female gender. However, you can go against all gender stereotypes and give your Roomba a silly name like Mr. Mary or something.
How to Name Your Roomba
If you don’t know how to name your Roomba, it’s a pretty simple process.
- 1. Download the iROBOT HOME app
- 2. Click on the More button (burger menu)
- 3. Tap Settings
- 4. Tap Robot Name
To ensure that the name sticks, your smartphone and your Roomba have to both be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. If you wish to name your Braava jet mop bot, you’ll have to connect your gadget and the robot through Bluetooth.

Using Alexa to Call on Your Roomba
Connecting your Roomba to Alexa is a straightforward process. Everything you need to do this is right there in the iROBOT HOME app.
- 1. Open up the iROBOT HOME app
- 2. Navigate to Settings
- 3. Tap on the Works with Amazon Alexa option
- 4. Tap on the Link Account option. This will open up the Alexa app or, if you don’t have it installed, the website in your default browser
- 5. Tap on the Link button
Afterward, you will be redirected to the iROBOT HOME app, which will prompt a connection to your Roomba. After that, Alexa should be able to understand the orders you give your Roomba based on the commands and the name you input for the robot vacuum cleaner.
What Roomba Names Are Unavailable?
There’s really no restriction on what you can name your Roomba. Some have even used inappropriate names for their Roombas that we won’t get into. However, there are probably a few names you should refrain from using.

For instance, if you want to name your Roomba X Æ A-12, you’re going to have a difficult time pronouncing it, and your Alexa device will have a hard time understanding what you mean. Try to avoid using punctuation marks and symbols as they’ll just make controlling your Roomba harder. Of course, you can always go back to the iROBOT HOME settings and change the name later on.
