Bissell 2998 vs 2999 Upright Vacuum Comparison

The Bissell 2998 and 2999 are similar in many ways—they’re both pet-oriented uprights designed to pick up much more than just pet hair and have optional brush rolls for cleaning both bare and carpeted surfaces. However, their differences, though few, set them worlds apart. Read our review and comparison of the Bissell 2998 and 2999 to see which of these uprights is best for your home.

Bissell 2998

Lift-Off Canister Pod

The most prominent difference between the 2998 and the 2999 is that the former is a Lift-Off model, whereas the latter isn’t. Bissell has followed in Shark’s footsteps to create a convertible upright/canister unit for cleaning more than just floors. The Lift-Off pod separates from the handle with a push of a button and becomes a handheld canister, allowing you to clean carpeted staircases, drapes, upholstery, and other above-floor surfaces. The total weight of the Lift-Off pod is about 10 pounds on an empty dustbin.

HEPA Sealed Allergen System

Both units are one step ahead of other Bissell uprights in terms of filtration and seal. The 2998 and 2999 use a HEPA Sealed Allergen System that consists of a HEPA filter that traps 99.97% of 0.3-micron particles or larger. The system prevents microscopic contaminants from exiting the vacuum’s dustbin and exhaust port, so there’s virtually no risk of contaminating your air with suctioned floor particles.

Super-Bright LEDs

Another feature where the two Bissell uprights differ is how the 2998 has bright LEDs installed on the floorhead. The lights illuminate dark spaces, making dust bunnies hiding beneath furniture and in closets much more visible, so you don’t miss a spot. Without the LEDs, you’re left working in the dark and relying on sound to determine which part of your floor still needs to be vacuumed.

Optional Brush Roll

The floorheads of both the 2998 and 2999 have optional brush rolls, meaning that you can safely vacuum bare floors and carpeted floors. The bristles dig deep into fibers to draw out and lift away hidden crumbs. The bristles are pretty stiff, so make sure you deactivate the brush roll when transitioning from carpets to hard floors.

One-Touch EasyEmpty Dustbin

Another awesome feature in both of these Bissell uprights is the EasyEmpty Dustbin. Both come with XL dustbins that trap more than a session’s worth of deep cleaning, and you can toss the contents of the dustbin by pressing a single button. There’s no internal hair or string reel, so you’ll have to manually fish out pet hair inside of the dust cup that doesn’t fall out.

Bissell 2999

Tangle-Free Brush Roll

The Bissell 2999, and the 2998 for that matter, both come with tangle-free brush rolls. They’re designed to pull in string and pet hair of all lengths and store them inside of the transparent dustbin. These brush rolls aren’t foolproof, and some users have found that they still have to snip bits of hair from the roll. However, it’s not nearly as bad as the brush rolls of other uprights that aren’t made to deal with pet hair.

9-Foot Suction Hose

Instead of having a Lift-Off pod, the 2999 relies on a good old-fashioned suction hose. It measures 9 feet in length, so reach high-up areas like drapes and bookshelves shouldn’t prove too difficult to clean. However, some users have pointed out that the static buildup inside of the suction hose tends to cause dust to cling to the inner lining. You can solve this issue by giving the suction hose a quick rinse and a thorough drying between uses.

Swivel Steering

To make matters easier on the user, Bissell has installed swivel a swivel steering neck in the 2999’s floorhead. You can glide the tool easily around bends, between obstacles, and underneath furniture, so there’s very little pre-vacuum prep involved.

Lightweight Design

The 2999 weighs just around 15 pounds on an empty dustbin. It’s not the lightest of all uprights, but it is about half a pound lighter than the 2998 in its upright form. However, you should know that what makes this a heavier unit is its motor, which is designed to suction tons of air and debris, making quick work of vacuuming entire homes.

So, while there are more overlapping specs and features than there are differing ones, it’s pretty clear that the Bissell 2998 is the better model by a wide margin. There’s suction hose doesn’t suffer from the same static issues as the 2999, and the detachable Lift-Off pod makes easy work of cleaning above-ground surfaces, such as drapes, steps, and bookshelves.
