Bissell 2252 CleanView Swivel Upright Vacuum Review

Dogs and cats can make great companions – but they certainly don’t do their share of the housework, and shedding season can be a nightmare for the pet owner who wants to keep a clean home.

Bissell CleanView 2252

That’s where the Bissell 2252 comes in, which is advertised specifically as a vacuum cleaner for pet owners. So will the 2252 have you cleaning like an animal? Read on to find out!

Swivel steering

First thing’s first, I am a great fan of the agility that comes with a swivel vacuum cleaner. Personally, when I use one I like to pretend I’m in command of a race car, zooming round corners in a dramatic skid. To be fair, that probably says more about my own level of maturity than anything else – but there’s a serious side to the swivel too.

For those with a bad back, arthritis or any other condition affecting their mobility, a swivel cleaner will be much easier to operate. And for all of us, a swivel cleaner feels much handier for getting right into those corners and manoeuvring around furnishings.

Pet hairs, be gone!

Now, there’s something that we’re all thinking – so let’s address the elephant in the room. The Bissell CleanView 2252 is prominently marketed as a ‘pet’ vacuum cleaner. But what exactly does that mean? Is it for cleaning the hairs right from your cat’s back? Or will it enable your Labrador to strap an apron on and get to work?

Well, what Bissell really mean by ‘pet’ vacuum cleaner is simply that it is particularly powerful. There isn’t really any different principle for suctioning pet hairs compared to any other dirt, apart from the fact that pet hairs can be particularly tricky and therefore need a bit more suction.

Comparing this model to Bissell’s CleanView 2486, there is no real difference, other than that this 2252 comes with a ‘turbo pet eraser’. This is an add-on which takes the form of a small plastic endpiece, which can be particularly useful for couches and armchairs.

It does a good job on animal hairs, and the price increase is not much. For most pet owners, then, the turbo pet eraser makes it worthwhile paying a small additional amount to upgrade from the 2486 to the 2252.

No more Bags

Bagless vacuum cleaners save you money, as you won’t have to keep buying bags. They’re also more convenient: there are few things more frustrating – in the cleaning sphere at least – than realising you’re out of bags and need to run to the store halfway through vacuuming your house.

Rather than being sucked into bags, hair and dirt is pulled into the transparent container that forms the bulk of the machine (hence the name ‘ClearView’), where you will see it whirring around thanks to Bissell’s cyclonic technology.

One downside to the vacuum, though, is that this container does not hold an awful lot of hair – you’ll find yourself having to empty it out regularly throughout your vacuuming session.

Easy to assemble and use

The 2252 is a pretty easy product – it doesn’t come in hundreds of parts, and simply clicks straight together once you’ve taken it out of the box.

The main section – the part with the transparent container for holding the fruits of the vacuum’s labour – clicks easily in and out. Some users, however, have noted that it requires quite a lot of force to get in back in – make sure you give it a good shove.

Users also like that the machine can be taken apart such that every component can be cleaned with soap and water. Not all vacuums are built in a way that makes this possible, and this can leave them smelling unpleasant once several years of house dust have been filtered through the system.

In addition, the cord – which at 27 feet in length is one of the longest power cables you’ll find – pulls straight in at the push of a button, saving you the effort of winding.

A brand with Pedigree

Melville Bissell was the inventor of the carpet sweeper, and founded his company as long ago as 1876, when America was only just adding its 38th state (Colorado, if you’re interested). This is a brand with a long history of reliable cleaning products, and the CleanView 2252 is a continuation of this tradition.

It’s marketed to pet owners, but this really only means it’s a powerful vacuum – anyone can benefit from a spotless floor with a Bissell CleanView 2252.
