For many years, vacuum cleaners have been using bags to trap dust particles, dirt, and debris collected from the vacuumed surfaces. Recently, vacuum manufacturers have come up with bagless designs that make use of filters to trap dirt and debris in a cup that can be emptied and reused.
Although bagless models are cheap to maintain because you will never have to buy a bag, the filters are not as effective as bags in removing the finest particles. Cleaning is this also quite messy, and some of the dirt could easily get into the mechanism and wreak havoc.
If you don’t want to deal with the mess involved when emptying this dustpan, then a bagged vacuum cleaner is the way to go. The bag will also ensure more effective filtration hence the air released by the vacuum cleaner back to your home will be purer.

Are bagged vacuum cleaners better?
The answer to this question boils down to personal preference. What is more important to you? Is it the lower maintenance cost offered by bagless vacuum cleaners, or is it the higher air filtration that comes with bagged vacuums?
If better air filtration is more important and you would not mind spending some money every once in a while on new bags, then bagged vacuums are definitely better. On the other hand, if you want to keep maintenance costs at a minimum, then you may not think very highly of bagged vacuums.
What maintenance requirements will my bagged upright vacuum have?
The best part about bagged vacuums is the low maintenance requirements. Since all the dirt goes to the bag, there are no regular maintenance operations that you will need to carry out after every cleaning run. Just unplug the vacuum and store it.
With bagged vacuums, you can forget about that annoying could of dust that usually fills the air when you open the dust cap for emptying.
The main thing that will be expected from you when it comes to maintenance is changing the bag. Depending on the size of your home and the amount of dirt that your vacuum typically collects on a normal run, it could take you anywhere from two to six months before you need to change the bag.
Most vacuums come with indicator lights that will tell you when the bag is full, so you don’t need to keep checking after every use.
Most models also have a secondary motor protection filter between the bag and motor. These filters will also need to be checked, but it could take years before they are dirty enough for replacement because most of the dirt goes inside the bag.
Do all bagged vacuums work with pet hair?
Pet hair can be a hard mess to clean. If you have pets, it will be very important that you pick a model that can comfortably handle pet hair.
If some people in your home suffer allergies from pet hair, dander from pets, or other such allergens, you will need a vacuum that will ensure that these particles will be removed from the floor and not released into the air.
In bagged vacuums, the bag will determine if the vacuum will be able to suck up these small particles. For most models, you can decide for yourself and determine if you will take a HEPA bag or the standard bag.
HEPA bags are generally more expensive than standard bags, but they do a better job of removing allergens from the air before it is released back into the room.
How will I know that the bag needs replacement?
This will depend on your upright vacuum cleaner. Most modern models will tell you when the bag needs replacement using an indicator light or some other visual display on the body of the vacuum cleaner. Another way of telling is if you see a marked reduction in suction.
This will usually be the case if you mostly vacuum dense, dusty materials such as carpet powders, baking soda or fine dust.
If you mostly vacuum lightweight and fluffy material like pet hair, it is unlikely that you will see a drop in suction even if the bag is full. In this case, you will need to change the bag when it becomes physically full.
Can the vacuum cleaner bag be cleaned and re-used?
Since the biggest maintenance cost concern about bagged vacuum cleaners is the cost of replacing these bags, this brings the question: can the bags be cleaned for re-use? Although nobody is going to stop you, it is not the most advisable thing to do.
The bags are meant to be disposable, designed only for a single use. Although emptying them will get rid of the large particles, there will still be some small particles in the fabric of the bag. If you empty it out and continue using it on your vacuum cleaner, it may not be able to keep all particles contained, and this could allow some dirt to reach the motor and cause problems.
You will also be exposing yourself to a lot of dust that could have harmful effects to your lungs.
