Coway Airmega 150 True HEPA Purifier Review

Coway is one of the frontrunners in terms of residential-grade air purifiers. The company released highly-rated model after another, including the Airmega 150. Today, we’re going to take a close look at the Airmega 150 and see whether it’s fit to clean the air in your bedroom, kitchen, or dorm.

214-Square-Foot Coverage and Performance Specs

As you might’ve guessed from our brief description of the Airmega 150 earlier, it’s not the largest air purifier available. At most, it has the ability to clean 214-square-foot rooms while maintaining more-than-decent CADR ratings (161, 138, and 219 CFM for dust, smoke, and pollen, respectively).

It’s best used in small spaces such as bedrooms or home office units, though some users have pushed it past the 300-square-foot mark with surprisingly good results.

3-Stage Filtration

The Airmega 150 features a triple-filter design that starts with a built-in, washable pre-filter for trapping the largest particles (think pet hair and dust bunnies). After that, the suctioned-in air passes through an activate carbon filter to eliminate kitchen and cigarette odors, as well as nauseating VOCs.

The final stage is the True HEPA Filter, an incredibly super-fine-mesh filter that’s designed to trap nearly 100% of all debris sized 0.3 microns and larger. The carbon and True HEPA filters come in a single cartridge with a maximum usage period of between 3 and 6 months.

Filter Replacement Alert

You could manually count down the days until your Airmega 150’s filter needs replacing, or you can rely on the highly precise filter replacement alert system built into the air purifier. An LED warning light will shine when its filter is nearing the end of its days.

Make sure you replace the filter on time so as to reintroduce your home to old dust, mold spores, and microscopic allergens stuck in the aging filter.

Air Quality Sensor with Auto Cleaning

The most surprising feature in the Airmega 150 is its Air Quality Sensor with auto-mode cleaning. The sensors constantly and consistently measure air-pollution levels, which it uses to determine the most appropriate fan speed (three speeds available) to rid airborne pollutants in a timely manner.

When the air has been properly purified, the Airmega 150 will shut off its fan until the sensors once again detect intolerable indoor-air pollution levels.

Passive Eco Mode

Sadly, the Airmega 150 doesn’t come with a built-in timer function, so there’s no way to run the air purifier for 1/2/4/8 hours before stopping on its own. But what’s awesome is that the Airmega 150 has a different kind of energy-saving mode: a passive Eco Mode.

Anytime you leave the Airmega 150 running, if its sensors don’t pick up on airborne pollutants for 30 minutes at a time, it’ll automatically shut down and await new orders. Talk about self-sufficiency of the highest order!

Verdict: A Low-Cost, Short-Range Air Purifier with Surprising Features

Admittedly, the Coway Airmega 150 doesn’t sport the widest range of features, nor does it come with the beefiest motor and fan, but it’s still one heck of an air purifier for bedrooms and other tiny spaces.

Built with an AQI sensor and a passive Eco Mode, the Airmega 150 doesn’t just clean air to perfection, but it also does it while reducing operating costs in the long run.

Air Recommended Air Purifiers

Our Pick Perfect for bedrooms, playrooms, and living rooms, the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH is one of the best-performing, most durable, and most economical purifiers we’ve tested.

Most Popular The Levoit Core 300 air purifier has some strong suits, but in our opinion it falls short of carving out a meaningful niche for itself. Its ideal use would be in a small bedroom occupied by someone who is sensitive to noise.

Also Great With high end air cleaning performance and a whisper quiet fan, the Winix 5500-2 is the perfect combination of power and finesse. It cleared airborne particulates out of our smokey testing room faster than any other model.

Best of the Best If you have a large space you want to remove irritants from, We recommend the Airmega 400S. All of Coway air purifiers do an excellent job of attacking indoor pollutants, and we highly recommend any of them. The 400S is designed to accommodate large room sizes.
