Coway Airmega 250 Room Air Purifier Review [AP-1720H]

Unlike other Coway models, the Airmega 250 isn’t much of a looker. However, what this air purifier lacks in looks, it more than makes up for in purifying performance. Check out our full review of the Coway Airmega 250 to see whether this device is the right air purifier for your home/apartment/office.

930-Square-Foot Coverage

First and foremost, how far does Airmega 250 reach? On its highest speed setting, this air purifier has the capacity to clean the air in rooms of up to 930 square feet while supplying 1 ACH (air change per hour). Place the Airmega 250 and you’re looking at a more efficient device that can provide multiple ACHs for maximum cleansing output and more breathable air.

It has a front-facing inlet that’s covered by multiple filter levels, while the output vent is located on top of the unit. As long as you have the Airmega 250 pointed inward toward the middle of a room, then you shouldn’t have to worry about improper placement.

200+ CADR

As a general rule of thumb, any air purifier with a maximum area coverage of over 500 square feet should have at least 200 CFM for all three pollutant categories.

To give you a good idea of how well the Airmega 250 performs, it has CADR (clean air delivery rate) figures of 249 CFM for smoke, 261 CFM for dust, and 230 CFM for pollen. These figures are far from being the highest for a residential-grade air purifier, but they certainly show that the Airmega 250 is capable of removing common allergens efficiently.

3-Tier Filtration

The Airmega 250’s outstanding purifying performance comes from the triple-tier filtration system. The first line of defense is a basic pre-filter with an EZ release design that makes pulling out the filter, washing, and reinstalling a breeze. Next up is the Max2 filter that consists of a Green True HEPA Filter and an activated carbon filter.

The Green True HEPA Filter has a cleaning efficiency of 99.999% for 0.01-micron particles and larger. While the difference between this and a “standard” H13 HEPA Filter is marginal, it’s nice to know that the Airmega 250 is technically more capable of removing allergens, viruses, and bacteria from the air with fewer slip-ups.

8-Hour Optional Timer

To save electricity and extend the lifespan of the Max2 filter, you should make use of the optional timer function. This timer can be set to 1, 4, or 8 hours, after which the motor will shut off automatically.

Alternatively, you can activate Auto Mode to manage when the Airmega 250’s fans turn on and off. We’ll talk about this in a later section.

6 Fan Modes

The Airmega 250 comes with basic fan modes, but the two we’d like to point out are Rapid and Auto Modes.

Rapid Mode is the highest fan speed that delivers the quickest air-cleaning times out of all of the available modes. It drains the most power, but this device is Energy Star certified, so there’s very little risk of wasting energy. Auto Mode works together with the Smart Pollution Sensors, which we’ll discuss next.

Smart Pollution Sensors

As you might expect from such a handy device, the Airmega 250 has built-in smart pollution sensors that work in conjunction with Auto Mode to turn the fan on when needed. Whenever indoor pollution concentrations reach a certain threshold, the Airmega 250 will automatically turn on and select the most appropriate fan speed to remove particles in the least amount of time.

The built-in timer function almost seems redundant if you have smart sensors constantly measuring air pollution levels and activating your air purifier when needed.

No Ionizer, No UV-C, No Ozone

Now, let’s briefly go over what the Airmega 250 doesn’t have. It doesn’t come with an ion generator or UV-C germicidal chamber, so it produces absolutely no ozone.

However, thanks to the activated carbon filter, the Airmega 250 is designed to neutralize pet, kitchen, and VOC odors, though the lack of a UV-C chamber means that microscopic organisms don’t shrivel up and die upon contact with the air purifier’s filter.

By no means is not having an ionizer or UV-C chamber a deal-breaker, but if you want that extra oomph to eliminate harmful viruses and bacteria, as well as foul odors, you’ll have to look for an air purifier elsewhere.

Verdict: How Good is the Coway Airmega 250?

It’s far to say that the Coway Airmega 250 is one of the heaviest-duty home-grade air purifiers available today. With a maximum reach of over 900 square feet with 200-plus CADR figures while sporting super-fine filters, homeowners should seriously consider picking up this air purifier.

Air Recommended Air Purifiers

Our Pick Perfect for bedrooms, playrooms, and living rooms, the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH is one of the best-performing, most durable, and most economical purifiers we’ve tested.

Most Popular The Levoit Core 300 air purifier has some strong suits, but in our opinion it falls short of carving out a meaningful niche for itself. Its ideal use would be in a small bedroom occupied by someone who is sensitive to noise.

Also Great With high end air cleaning performance and a whisper quiet fan, the Winix 5500-2 is the perfect combination of power and finesse. It cleared airborne particulates out of our smokey testing room faster than any other model.

Best of the Best If you have a large space you want to remove irritants from, We recommend the Airmega 400S. All of Coway air purifiers do an excellent job of attacking indoor pollutants, and we highly recommend any of them. The 400S is designed to accommodate large room sizes.
