In today’s day and age, we tend to use a lot of disposable items. Shopping bags, plastic knives and forks…lots of these items can actually be bad for the environment if we don’t properly recycle them.
However, a great way to reduce waste and help the environment is to purchase items that are sustainable and reusable, or to simply reuse items that we already have.
Some items are intended to be single use and will not be safe for further reusing. Plastic water bottles, for example, aren’t safe to be reused for drinking purposes. However, while you can definitely put them in the recycling bin, you can also use them in new and creative ways at home.
Ideas
Below are a bunch of ways that you can give plastic water bottles some new life.
Bird feeder: This is a quick and easy craft you can make at home. All you need are some string, scissors, a pencil, a plastic water bottle, and some bird seed to fill it with.
Terrarium: Making a terrarium can be an educational project for kids.
Egg yolk sucker: This is actually a kitchen hack that will save you time and mess. You can keep a plastic water bottle nearby during recipes that require that you separate egg whites from the yolk.
Bottle top bag sealer: You can use a water bottle to close the tops of bags instead of spending money on a clip. This works on pretty much any bag.
Piggy bank: This could be a fun and practical activity for children.
Watering containers: These creative bottles will water your plants for you while you’re away, or if you’re prone to forgetting to water them yourself.
Hanging planter: These cute baskets can be made with a bottle of any size.
Pencil case: The kids can make their own pencil case for everyday use.
Wind mobile: This one might be a fun activity in the Springtime. Just get some paint and paintbrushes to decorate, and a wooden stick and string to form the structural components.
Jewelry Stand: With some care and decoration, this might even make a nice gift.
Hanging bottle garden: This project is a bit more complicated than most on this list, but if done correctly, could make a gorgeous addition to your garden. The bottles need to be strung together on both ends. Then, this project can be hung from anything sturdy.
Unfortunately, even with all these ideas, you probably wont be able to use every single plastic water bottle you have at home. So, try to keep on top of recycling those excess water bottles that you can’t use up. Remember, you can always save the unused parts in case a future craft comes up! But in terms of daily life, its always good to have a plan for dealing with and sorting your recyclables properly.
