Standard Desk Dimensions

Where To Start

No matter the purpose of buying your desk, it is a good idea to have a few things to consider. Depending on how big or small your office is, you need to get a desk that will appropriately fit the space.

Unless you are going for a comedic effect, it is generally recommended to not get a huge desk for a small space. Look at the dimensions when shopping for the right desk; height, width, and depth. This will help make sure that you have enough space to work on and can avoid clutter.

Sitting Desk

Sitting desks are the most common desks, obviously; but it is easy to buy one that is too large or too small for you and your space. For optimal comfort, try to consider the clearance at the knee. If it is any less than 18 inches, your knees might hit the top, or it could sit too low for you to be able to use a computer or write effectively and comfortably. You also want to look at your feet and what is around them.

Make sure there is a space that provides at least four inches of clearance so that your feet can fit under the desk. Again, there should also be a depth of at least 24 inches so that you aren’t kicking the desk.

On the off chance that this is a shared workspace and you need to seat more than one person at the desk, consider giving at least two feet wide of space per person otherwise it might feel a bit claustrophobic.

There are so many types and styles of desks that fit different workspaces and serve different purposes. Below we have outlined a few different styles that we have found to be some of the best and most useful for almost any workspace.

Hemnes Desk

This is a pretty standard desk that is made by Ikea and is perfect for the home or the office. The Hemnes desk has two storage spaces on either side of the seating opening. One side has a simple cabinet that opens like a door, while the other side has two drawers that pull out. This is perfect for holding files, papers, as well as other supplies you might need to store.

There is also a board covering the backside of the desk so as to hide unsightly cords and cables. There is also an attachment sold separately that goes on the desk that can provide more shelf and storage space if you so desire.

The Hemnes desk is great because of all the storage space that it can provide in such a small space. The desktop sits comfortably at 29.5 inches, 18.5 inches deep, and nearly four feet wide.

Celine Desk

The Celine style desk is a minimal desk that is extremely stylish and great for any workspace. There are four legs, like most desks or tables, however they are angled slightly towards the center. There is a simple drawer that occupies nearly two-thirds of the desk and pulls out. While it isn’t a very deep drawer, it can hold smaller items like pens, some paper, and maybe even a few notebooks. The other side is open through and through.

This give some the opportunity to put some decorations in it if they so choose, but others use it for a storage space for charging laptops or other items that they might need to access easily.

The Celine desk, like we said, is extremely minimal, but don’t underestimate it. With a height of nearly 30 inches, 21.75 inches deep, and 43.5 inches wide, this is a great option for those that don’t require much. It works great in the office and at home even as a decorative piece!

Eames Desk

The Eames desk was created by two brothers named Ray and Charles Eames. They sought to create the perfect desk for home and office. The Eames desk is typically constructed with wood, steel, as well as wire. There is a section on one side or the other meant for a cubby or a drawer type storage space. Typically the back and side panels are brightly colored to give this otherwise mundane object some life.

Because the Eames desk was designed with the home and office in mind, the brothers who created it wanted to make sure that it had plenty of room for usage. This desk sits 29 inches tall, 28 inches deep, and is an impressive 60 inches wide giving you plenty of room for anything you might need to work on!

Standing Desk

Standing desks are becoming increasingly popular for a lot of people and students to combat the negative effects of sitting for extended periods of time. If there is appropriate seating available, this can provide the best of both worlds while still being able to maintain productivity.

These elevated surfaces should be anywhere from 38 to 42 inches high with a comfortable width of three feet. If you are trying to make a space to accommodate more than one person, make sure that each person has about twenty inches around them.

Whether you are trying to get a home workspace set up or furnish your current office with a comfortable desk, there are some important factors to account for. Hopefully with the information you can get yourself a desk that not only fits the space provided, but is comfortable, conducive to your work, as well as stylish!
