Schlage Z-Wave Home Keypad Lever Review

Traditional in appearance; modern in function. The Z-Wave Home Keypad Lever is one of the latest smart locks from Schlage. This Alexa-compatible lock comes in an elegant, aged finish, and it’s equipped with a numerical keypad that can remember almost a dozen access codes.

With Schlage’s app on your phone, you can remotely monitor who enters and exits your home, and give the dog walker, the babysitter or a visitor a temporary code, so they can come inside when you’re away from the house. The smart lock is enabled with Z-wave technology, and you can use it with the Nexia Home Intelligence system.

Schlage made this lock with durability in mind. The lock features a long throw bolt and a strong clutch. It can withstand multiple heavy blows, and the deadbolt will keep turning after 100s of 1,000s of cycles. Installation takes less than an hour, and you don’t need to be an electrical or tech expert to do it.

A Gorgeous Finish

You don’t have to sacrifice style to keep up with modern technology. The Schlage keypad lever lock showcases a Venetian bronze finish with rubbed edges and graceful curves for a beautiful, aged appearance.

It’s also designed to be installed most residential exterior doors, ranging in thickness from 1 3/8 inches to 1/ 3/4 inches. Whether the backset of the door spans 2 3/8 inches or 2 3/4 inches, you’ll have no problems getting the keypad lock to fit.

A Lever-Style Handle

The curvature of the lever-style handle also lends the keypad lock’s traditional look. Although the handle is slender, don’t be fooled into thinking it’s flimsy. In general, levers can survive a greater amount of torque than knobs. The lever on this Schlage keypad lock is able to stand up to 450 pound-feet of torque. Bonus – you can reverse the direction of the lever if you’re left-handed.

Keypad and Key Entry

On the Z-Wave Home smart lock that, there is a backlit keypad with large numbers for easy visibility and simple lock/unlock button pair to keep your home secure while inside of it. The keypad can remember as many as 19 codes that are four digits in length. You can program a code directly from the keypad or remotely (see “A Smartphone App” below).

Schlage realizes that there may be times when you want or need a standard key. Therefore, the manufacturer includes two keys with the smart keypad door lock.

Universal Access Technology

The lock is compatible with several universal smart home systems, allowing it to integrate seamlessly into your existing system. With a hub, you can control the lock through Alexa. If you use Nexia Home Intelligence to control your surveillance cameras or lights, this lock works with Nexia too. The lock is Z-wave enabled, which means it can communicate with other Z-wave devices.

A Smartphone App

Secure your home from anywhere you have a Wi-Fi connection or cell service. The Schlage app allows you to remotely lock and unlock your door and get text or email alerts. You can program codes or give someone a scheduled code. The clean layout of the app makes it easy for you to learn and navigate its functions.

A Grade-2 Deadbolt

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) uses a three-level grading system for door locks. Grade 2 locks, like the Schlage Z-Wave keypad lock, are the strongest residential lock you can buy with latches that can withstand 400,000-plus turns and 90 foot-pounds of force.

Inside of the keypad lock, there is a clutch mechanism that moves the lever and a 1-inch throw bolt that’s 1/2-inch longer than standard bolts. The commercial-grade status of the clutching motor along with the extra-long bolt help to prevent kick-downs.

No-Hassle Installation

Don’t cancel your weekend plans. You can install the Schlage Z-Wave Home Keypad Lever in as few as 30 minutes with just a screwdriver and the included set of instructions. Throw in another 5 to 10 minutes for wireless setup, and you’re good to go. There is no electrical wiring involved since the lever lock runs on a 9-Volt battery. The lock also comes with a rounded strike plate.

Two Worlds Brilliantly Collide

Who says there is no place for classics in our tech-fueled world? The Schlage Z-Wave Home Keypad Lever has a traditional design and finish that instantly elevates the style of your front door. Almost anyone can install it by themselves, and it works with the most popular smart communication systems.

Schlage Z-Wave Lever Review

The keypad is backlit, and the numbers are easy to read. The deadbolt and lever meet our high standards in terms of sturdiness, and we appreciate the inclusion of a few standard keys. With a 19-code memory, you’ll be able to program a unique code for everyone who lives in your house and anyone else you choose.

Before you buy the smart lock, there are a few not-so-awesome things you need to know. The lock is battery-operated instead of wired, which is one reason installation is so easy. While the battery should last for 2 to 3 years, you do have to use a screwdriver to access the battery compartment. Depending on the hub you own, you may need to move the hub close to the lock to connect it. Otherwise, you’re going to enjoy using the Schlage Z-Wave lever lock from the keypad and from your phone.
