On the whole, the Whynter ARC-14S 14,000 BTU Dual Hose Portable Air Conditioner is an exceptionally powerful portable air conditioner. With a Maximum Area Coverage of 500 square-feet, this portable air conditioner thoroughly cools larger spaces. Plus, its dehumidifier can remove up to 101 pints of moisture per-day, ensuring that your space is free of humidity. If that is what you’re looking for, and you don’t mind paying for it, then the Whynter ARC-14S is an excellent choice.

Pros: Extremely powerful, cools large spaces, very effective dehumidifier

Cons: Somewhat expensive

Three Environmental Functions

Whynter designed the AC unit to produce 14,000 BTUs of refreshingly frosty air, using ozone-safe, energy-efficient R-410A refrigerant to do so. This means it can cover up to 500 square feet without any hot spots. For most owners, the portable AC is a great choice for the master bedroom, a converted garage or a home office.

Cooling isn’t the only function of the Whynter ARC-14S. This portable AC also removes moisture from the air. While working as a dehumidifier, the unit can pull as much as 101 pints of water from the air on a daily basis. Therefore, you can beat the heat at a healthy relative humidity.

If you want fresh air without cooling down the room, you can operate it as a fan and circulate the air in a stuffy space. On fan mode, you have three speeds from which to choose. The highest speed moves the air at an impressive rate of 222 cubic feet per minute via the flip-up outlet vent.

Powerful Yet Quiet

Rated at 1,250 watts, the ARC-14S is able to handle the hottest summer days. You can program the thermostat anywhere from 61 to 89 degrees Fahrenheit to tailor the temperature to your comfort level. Even on full blast, the portable AC isn’t noisy. At most, the sound reaches 56 decibels, which equates to a quiet conversation.

Comprehensive Control Panel and Remote

On the front panel of the unit, you’ll find the controls for every function, including a 24-hour timer. These silver buttons are push-style controls complete with illustrations indicating their purpose. Above the controls, there is a well-lit digital screen that displays the temperature, fan speed and important alerts.

While frontal placement, as opposed to top placement, of the buttons and screen on the unit means you don’t have to stand up to read the temperature or change a setting, Whynter also provides a handy remote. This remote is set up with all the functions found on the main panel, and it has a digital display.

Made to Move

Surprisingly, the ARC-14S weighs 80 pounds. However, you wouldn’t know it thanks to the addition of four heavy-duty caster wheels that help you roll the unit wherever you need cool air. It’s also fairly tall at 35.5 inches, which allows the portable AC to maximize the airflow in comparison to small, squat models.

Dual-Hose Configuration With Automatic Drainage

To cool a room as quickly as possible, Whynter chose a two-hose setup for the ARC-14S. The intake hose and exhaust hose pull air from the outdoors to cool and release hot air back to where it came from without you needing to drain the accumulated moisture. Of course, manual drainage is still an option.

Whynter includes everything you need for the portable AC. The window kit can be shortened to 20 inches and stretched to 46 inches, fitting most standard windows. Each hose extends to 60 inches to give you wiggle room for the unit’s placement. Plus, you get a cover to protect the AC when in storage.

Multiple Filtration Media

Every time you take a breath, the ARC-14S ensures the air you breathe is clean. It comes with a pre-filter that you can wash and reuse once every few weeks and an odor-eliminating carbon filter that has a 3-month lifespan. If you want more filtration efficiency, Whynter offers a separate antimicrobial filter and an intake filter.

Designed With Safety in Mind

Whynter added several mechanisms for safe use of the ARC-14S. The portable AC is equipped with an LCDI plug, which detects current leaks that occur if the cord becomes damaged. Should you encounter a problem, the overall unit is covered for 1 year and the compressor is warrantied for 3 years.

On the control panel, an indicator illuminates and the AC stops running if the built-in reservoir is at capacity. While the unit automatically restarts after a power outage, Whynter also made sure to keep the compressor from overheating by putting the compressor circuit on a delayed start.
