What Does “Detect” Stand For? Dyson Stick Vacuum Feature Explained

Dyson will come out with some of the most insanely high-tech features for its stick vacuum cleaners. For instance, who in the world would’ve imagined that installing an LCD display on a vacuum cleaner could be so helpful?

But that’s not where the fun stops. Dyson, as the market leader in stick vacuums in the US and Europe, goes beyond the realm of unusual. Very recently, the company introduced a new series of stick vacuums known as Detect.

So, what sets the Detect series apart from Dyson’s others stick vacuum cleaners? That’s what we’re here to find out.

What Is DLS?

Detect is a brand-new feature in Dyson stick-vacuum-kind that takes Dyson’s previous DLS (Dynamic Load Sensor) system to a whole new world. Let’s look at what DLS is before discussing Detect.

When it was first released, DLS was a state-of-the-art measuring system that would adjust the motor’s suction power based on what surface it’s currently cleaning. For instance, when transitioning from bare floors to carpeting, the DLS system would inform the motor that it needs to increase suction power to become more effective at cleaning carpeting.

The Dyson V11 Torque Drive is the perfect example of a Dyson stick vac that utilizes this type of technology.

What Is Detect?

Now, Detect takes the “simplistic” DLS system to the next level. Detect is a built-in counting and measuring system within a Dyson stick vacuum cleaner that counts how many particles make their way into the vacuum’s inlet and what size they are.

After determining how contaminated your floors are and with what sized debris, the Dyson stick vac will automatically adjust its suction power according. So, for instance, when cleaning high-traffic floors with lots of sand and grit, the Detect system will increase suction power to pick up more debris in less time, regardless of whether the user is cleaning carpeted or smooth surfaces.

Is Detect Worth It?

From our standpoint, the new Detect system is definitely worth noticing. For the most part, users don’t want to manually shift between cleaning speeds to save battery life (which isn’t a huge issue for the V12 and V15 Detect since they can operate for 60 minutes per charge).

With the Detect system, all you have to do is move the stick around and let the highly intelligent motor do the thinking for you. No stress, no mess!
