The Ring Video Doorbell supports 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi connectivity with a large covering range area; this feature helps if you have an access point placed far from your front door. The best feature is its improved motion sensors.

Unlike other smart doorbells, this Ring version has an option to only detect the motion that is close to the camera; since the Ring Video Doorbell has near-field detection technology that can differentiate movement based on distance.

Ring Video Doorbell 3 was released in April 2020. It’s a spitting-image of the Ring Video Doorbell in design, and they both come in black and gray. The Ring Video Doorbell 3 has a 1080p camera with a 160-degree field of view, a microphone and speaker for two-way audio, and motion sensors.

The newest addition to its feature-packed design is person detection. It can detect motion and analyses it to see it’s a person or not, and you will also get a notification if there’s motion anywhere near the bell.

Ring Video Doorbell 3 also adds privacy zones, which helps you block off an area you don’t want to capture. This feature will prove useful to not intrude on whatever goes on in your neighbor’s yard.

You also can tap into the live view anytime, and it has infrared night vision to capture nighttime activities. The Video Doorbell 3 is dual-band, connecting to 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies, so it’s compatible with new and older routers.

One more thing that differs from the older version is the removable rechargeable battery. To get it out, you just need to undo a single security screw. The battery lasts anywhere from four to eight weeks, depending on how often your doorbell’s motion sensors kick in.

The Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus also has a built-in microphone and loudspeaker, but unlike its predecessor, the Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus has noise cancellation technology to reduce environmental noises.

The Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus audio recording quality and audio playing quality is better than other Ring Video Doorbell versions. One stand-out feature of the Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus is its high-tech Pre-Roll feature that can record black and white footage that shows you what happens four seconds before the motion sensor is triggered.

Mind you that the Pre-Roll video is black and white and lower in resolution than the standard video, and it cannot record at night since it doesn’t come a night-vision feature.

The Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus also has the same motion sensors as other Ring Doorbell products, but another differentiating point is that you can customize how far the motion sensor pick up movement.

This will come in handy to record intruders—human or otherwise—at shorter distances instead of picking up the slightest movement from several feet beyond your property line.

Final Words

Basically, the only difference between the 3 and the Plus version is the Pre-Roll video feature, which can come in handy in certain situations. Whether it’s worth the cost or not is entirely up to you, but many users feel that the Doorbell 3 covers all of the bases well enough without the addition of Pre-Roll recording.
