Smart Deadbolt Buying Guide

When beefing up your home’s security system, a smart deadbolt is a must-have. Of course, choosing one can be tough if you’re new to smart-home technology, but this guide is the perfect primer. Scroll down to find out how to choose a smart deadbolt that’s suitable for your home and tech-knowledge level.

Keypad or Touchless

Smart deadbolts offer two methods of contact – a keypad or touchless access. Raised-button keypads are ideal for the novice user as all they require is punching in a numerical code. If you want to modernize it a bit, there are plenty of smart deadbolts with a touchscreen.

Those who are more comfortable using smart-home devices will do well with touchless access. Almost all smart deadbolts sync to a smartphone app or a Bluetooth connection. Both of these connection protocols provide convenient, hands-free access (read more about Bluetooth and Wi-Fi below). Wi-Fi also lets you use Alexa or Assistant for voice control.

Bluetooth or Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are two of several communication protocols, which are the way smart deadbolts communicate with your smartphone and your home’s smart devices. Z-Wave and Zigbee are two others. Z-Wave and Zigbee require automation hubs, which we’ll explore further in the FAQs section.

Bluetooth-enabled smart deadbolts don’t drain your deadbolt’s battery as fast as Wi-Fi, but you have to be near the deadbolt for Bluetooth to work as it doesn’t have a wide signal range. If you need to lock/unlock your door while you aren’t at home, monitor the deadbolt’s status or grant temporary access to visitors, Wi-Fi is your best bet.

Automated Locking

When security is of paramount importance, a smart deadbolt that can automatically lock is a great idea. Deadbolts with an auto-locking feature will ensure your door is closed after a specific amount of time or when you’re a certain distance away. This function is perfect for busy people and forgetful teens.

On the flip side, there are smart deadbolts that also automatically unlock the door. Although this is more about convenience than security, it’s a helpful feature to have in a deadbolt. Some smart deadbolts don’t even need a communication-protocol sensor. Instead, they come with an integrated sensor added by the manufacturer.

Installation

It’s unlikely you’ll need to ask a professional or an experienced DIYer for installation help. However, some smart deadbolts are simpler to install than others. The easiest ones snap into place, so you can use both of your hands to attach the screws. Typically, it only takes 10 to 15 minutes to install a smart deadbolt to your door.

FAQs

Can I Toss My Old Door Key Once I Install a Smart Deadbolt?

Many smart deadbolts are designed to allow for physical key use. Some come with new keys while others work with the key you already have. If you opt for a smart deadbolt that doesn’t work with a physical key, it’s less likely an intruder can pick the lock.

While you can throw away the door key, it’s always good to hang onto it just in case. If the deadbolt’s battery dies, your Wi-Fi goes down or you lose your phone, a physical key is good to have on hand.

What Does a BHMA Rating Mean?

BHMA stands for Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association. This organization created a rating system that tells you about the security of the smart deadbolt. Testers for BHMA determine this by putting the deadbolt through its paces in terms of impact resistance, torque cycles and pull strength. Grade 1 and 2 smart deadbolts are the most durable.

How Do Z-Wave and Zigbee Work?

As we briefly mentioned above, Z-Wave and Zigbee are two other communication protocols besides Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Both Z-Wave and Zigbee need a compatible hub in order to work.

Instead of making a direct connection to your smartphone, the hub transforms the communication protocol into a language your home’s Wi-Fi router understands. Smart devices connected to the hub create a mesh network, allowing all of the devices to communicate with one another.

My Landlord Won’t Let Me Change the Locks. Can I Still Use a Smart Deadbolt?

Yes. Renters can use certain smart deadbolts without violating the terms of their lease. Removing your old mechanical deadbolt is not always a prerequisite for installing a smart deadbolt. There are plenty of smart deadbolts designed to fit over an existing lock, and a lot of these still work with the physical key you and your landlord already have.

Choosing the Right Smart Deadbolt for Your Home

No matter your comfort level with technology, make sure the smart deadbolt is durable – check out the BHMA rating. Smart deadbolts with a keypad are great for newbies while those that fit over an existing deadbolt are suitable for renters. Of course, the deadbolt should be able to integrate with your preferred communication protocol.
