Any pet owner will testify that pet droppings and robots aren’t the ideal couple. However, as time progresses, we’ve seen some pretty impressive improvements in the robot vacuum cleaner game, especially when it comes to avoiding nasty obstacles.
Today, we’d like to compare two highly regarded pet-friendly robot vacuums—the Roomba j7+ and the Shark AV2501AE. If you’re on the fence regarding which to get, this comparison should settle the matter for you once and for all.
iRobot Roomba j7+
1800-Pa Suction + Carpet Boost
The j7+ delivers as much as 1800 Pa of suction power, which, by Roomba standards, isn’t all that impressive. However, what is impressive is that the j7+ also has Carpet Boost technology to maximize suction power every time it sets wheel on carpeted surfaces.
Rubber-Paddle Roller
How does the iRobot Roomba j7+ clean carpets and smooth floors without delivering much suction power? The magic sauce is in the rubber-paddle roller.
This innovative design is much more capable of picking up debris from carpets than standard bristled brushes, and hair and fur don’t tend to wrap around the rubberized brush as much.
Pet Owner Official Promise
Most robot vacuums will avoid large obstacles, while some have to blindly bump into objects to know where it’s going. The Roomba j7+ takes it to a whole new level.
Built into the robot is a laser sensor and camera that can identify solid animal waste. iRobot guarantees that your j7+ will avoid poop with its P.O.O.P. As far as poop avoidance systems go, nothing comes close to the j7+’s high-tech camera.

Dirt Detection
What’s great about the j7+ is that while it follows a preprogrammed route to clean your floors, its sensors can pick up newly made dirt stains on the go.
When it does, it’ll leave its cleaning route to pick up the stain before going back on track and resuming work. Other robots, like the AV2501AE, will have to run a new cycle to pick up new messes.
Clean Base for Auto-Dirt Disposal
As the first company to release self-emptying bases for its robots, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that you’ll receive a self-emptying base for your new j7+ upon purchase.
The Clean Base acts as a vacuum cleaner for your robot. When the j7+ docks in the Clean Base, debris will get suctioned out of the dustbin and fall into a filter-lined bag. At most, it can store 60 days’ worth of debris before reaching max capacity, which is identical to that of the Shark AV2501AE.

Powerfins Brush Roll
First off, you should know that the AV2501AE shares many similar specs and features with the j7+. For instance, it comes with a silicone brush roll that’s studded with multiple fins to loosen dirt and hair and send it directly into the dustbin. What makes the Powerfins Brush Roll impressive is its self-cleaning capabilities. The fins will actively beat at any wads of hair that attempt to wrap about the cylindrical brush roll at any time.
UltraClean Mode with 30% More Power
In the j7+, you get an auto-activated Carpet Boost cleaning mode. The AV2501AE takes a different approach—by activating UltraClean Mode, the robot will produce 30% more cleaning power than older Shark models, which should be right around the 1800-Pa mark.
LiDAR Mapping and Navigation
Similar to the Roomba model, the AV2501AE uses a series of laser sensors to create a digital layout of your home. However, according to some users, it can take the Shark robot multiple adventures through your home to produce an accurate floorplan.
But when it does, you’ll gain all perks available with the j7+, including defining no-go zones, cleaning specific rooms, and creating cleaning schedules.

True HEPA Filter
Something that stands out in the AV2501AE is the HEPA-lined filter bags that fit inside of the allergen-sealed self-cleaning base. The HEPA filter is designed to capture up to 99.97% of particles as tiny as 0.3 microns, so common allergens like dust, pollen, and dander have a minimal chance of escaping.
AI-Guided Obstacle Sensor
Again, we have to talk about a shared feature between the j7+ and the AV2501AE: a built-in obstacle sensor. However, what sets this robot apart from the j7+ is that it doesn’t use fancy cameras.
Instead, it has a 360-degree AI-guided laser sensor that can pick up the location of obstacles as small as 7 inches in height. As handy as this feature is at helping the robot avoid furniture legs and pet bowls, it won’t be of much help when it comes to not stepping in doggy doo-doo.
