How to Clean an Air Mattress? Air Mattress Cleaning Guide

Air mattresses have become a very popular choice for people who need a portable, light mattress. Not only can you use an air mattress for sleeping on a bed, but they are also used as a flotation device. Air mattresses are made from a variety of materials, including polyvinyl chloride.

More expensive variants are made from textile-reinforced polyurethane plastic as well as rubber. Most mattresses come with a portable pump that you can use to inflate the pump quickly. They can be stored very easily after they are deflated.

An air mattress is a fantastic item and should be a part of your household. If you have a guest staying at your place, you can take out the air mattress and inflate it for them. However, because they are mostly kept on the floor, air mattresses get very dirty, very quickly.

If you don’t know how to clean the air mattress, things often tend to get out of hand. But, there’s nothing to worry about. Cleaning an air bed isn’t as difficult as you might think. Here are a few simple steps that you should follow if you want to clean your air mattress.

Step One: Take Safety Precautions

Keep in mind that not every air mattress comes with a pump built-in. But, if you have a mattress that doesn’t come with a built-in pump and needs to be attached to a power source, it’s recommended that you take it out.

Make sure that you remove all connections and disconnect the wires before you start cleaning your air mattress.

Step Two: Remove Any Covers

If you have a sheet or a pad or even a blanket on top of your mattress, you need to remove it first. Ideally, you should change the sheets every week or two, especially if the air mattress is being used regularly.

Take off the sheets and chuck them in the washing machine while it’s being cleaned. Most people think that air beds are cleaned while they are deflated, but that’s not the right way to do it. However, if it’s deflated, you won’t be able to clean through the wrinkles and creases.

However, once it’s inflated, the surface will become taut and cleaning out all of the dirt and grime from in between will become easier.

Step Three: Vacuuming

If you can see visible dirt and grime the mattress, it’s time to start vacuuming your mattress. Before you start the wiping process, it’s important that all visible dirt from the surface is removed. If the dust isn’t cleaned, it’s just going to spread and leave stains on the surface when you start wiping the surface.

In some situations, you might not be able to see the dust. Even then, you should make it a practice to clean the surface carefully. Once all of the debris and dust has been removed, it’s time to start the wiping process.

Step Four: Use a Soft Cloth

Take a soft, clean cloth and dip it in rubbing alcohol. Then, start wiping down the air bed carefully with the alcohol. Pay special attention to exposed areas that may have gotten stained. Rubbing alcohol helps remove and dislodge stains that have gotten hard over time.

If certain stains cannot be removed, pour a little rubbing alcohol on it. Then, rinse off the soft cloth and wipe the stained area again. It will take a bit of time, but if you continue to wipe the mattress this way, you will be able to get all stains off eventually.

Just make sure that the water does not enter the insides of the mattress. If that happens, mold and bacteria may begin to form after a while.

Step Five: Let the Mattress Dry Out

Once the mattress has been cleaned, you have to let it dry. If the weather is a bit warm, you can place the mattress out in the sun to dry. In most situations, the mattress will dry out completely in the next four to five hours. After it’s done, you can decide to either store it, or you can just put on the cleaned sheets again and use it.

You should make it a practice to clean the mattress after every few months. If you notice a lot of stains on the mattress, take it out and clean it. This will help prevent bacteria from settling into the mattress, and also keep insects at bay.
