Honeywell HPA200 vs HPA300: Air Purifier Comparison

Wouldn’t it be nice to breathe fresh and odorless air at home without having to keep your windows open at all times? Air purifiers are excellent and affordable solutions that could also kill 99% of the airborne bacteria and viruses. They are ideal for those of us with lung conditions, newborns or just people who like their home to be a castle of health and comfort.

Honeywell HPA200

If you’ve got funky smells at home, or you want to protect the health and wellbeing of your loved ones, two air purifiers are designed to help you out: the Honeywell HPA200 and the Honeywell HPA300.

Overview of the models

With an attractive oval design and proper color selection, the HPA200 fits exceptionally well into modernly decorated homes. It takes as little floor space as possible too, so it looks inconspicuous being placed next to walls or in corners.

This model is packed with a multi-filter system that eliminates cigarette smoke, dust, pollen, allergens, viruses, bacteria and odors from the air. It is the perfect solution to purifying the air of single rooms such as kitchen, bedroom or living room.

The HPA300 model has received a boost in size compared to the HPA200, thus having increased power properties – more about this later. Overall, this purifier is no enemy to your peripheral vision – it has a pleasing and inconspicuous look.

A special HEPA filter on the air purifier captures pollen, mold spores, pet hair, household dust, odors and smoke, eliminating 99,97% of air pollutants, making a must-have tool for taking care of newborns and loved ones with lung conditions.

Air purification process and filtration system

The concept is simple: the dirty air is sucked in by a powerful fan, passing through a double-filtration system before getting pumped out off the top of the machine. The first filter is carbon based. It ensures the air is separated from the larger particles and odors. Then, the air passes through a HEPA filter which effectively removes up to 99,97% of the pollutants in the air – basically everything larger than 0.03 microns.

Despite being larger, the Honeywell HPA300 works on the same the principle. Two filters make sure that 99,97% of pollutants are effectively removed. Bacteria, viruses, dust, pet hairs, allergens and odors and everything larger than 0.03 microns are captured or killed.

Maintenance is also easy and straightforward. The first carbon activated filter on the air purifier requires replacement every three months, while you’d get away with replacing the HEPA filter once a year.

Verdict: The air purification process undergoes the same steps in both models. A two-stage filtration system is used: initial carbon activated a filter to remove odors and larger particles and a HEPA filter for any other pollutant larger than 0.03 microns.

Room size coverage

The Honeywell HPA200 is specifically designed for medium to large-sized rooms like bedrooms and living rooms. According to Honeywell, the purifier will produce noticeable results for rooms up to 310 square feet in less than 30 minutes. Not that this purifier cannot be used as an entire-house solution, but it must be noted it will take a much longer time for it to clean the air of an entire house than a specially designed-for-the-job purifier.

As the bigger brother of the HPA200, this air purifier is designed to tackle multiple rooms or entire houses. According to Honeywell, it can purify the air of rooms up to 465 square feet in less than 20 minutes. Then it will continue ‘renewing’ the air every 20-30 minutes. Powerful and energy-efficient, it is the perfect solution for medium to large rooms that require quick and continuous purification, like kitchens and garage workshops.

Verdict: The models are designed with different tasks in mind. The HPA200 is ideal for bedrooms and living rooms, while the HPA300 is more suited for kitchens and workshops or as an entire-house solution. It must be noted that the HPA200 is capable of doing the same job, but is less powerful and will take a longer time.

Control options and noise levels

There are four settings you can use on the HPA200, according to your preference: Germ, General Clean, Allergen, and Turbo. The power rises correspondingly with 29W per hour on ‘Germ’ and 83W on ‘Turbo,’ with a CADR rating of around 180 on its maximum setting.

Another option you can enjoy is the ‘auto-shut-off’ function. You can set the unit to work for 2, 4 or 8 hours before it turns off automatically. This is especially handy if you want it to purify the air overnight or you have to leave and won’t be there to turn it off yourself.

The quality-built, well-oiled fan inside ensures that the box emits just 58 DB on its highest setting – great for watching TV or chatting with friends or family.

You have the same four options at your disposal on the Honeywell HPA300: Germ, General, Allergen, and Turbo. On Turbo, the energy expenditure is 130 Watts per hour – this is slightly more power than a standard light bulb, so it’s very economical as well.

The noise pollution is not bad too. On its lowest setting, ‘Germ’, it emits a pleasant white noise, ideal for use when watching a movie for example.

Verdict: Once again, you can set the purifier to turn off after 2,4 or 8 hours, freeing you from having to be there all the time.
