Global Air 10,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Cooling/Fan Review

You’re AC goes out in the middle of summer, and you don’t have thousands of dollars lying around. What are your options? Fans and open windows are the cheap route, but this method won’t keep you cool in 95-degree weather. A window AC unit will cool down a room, but it does no favors for your home exterior’s appearance. Plus, the weight and bulkiness make it difficult to lift and seat the unit into the window.

Global Air 10,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Cooling/Fan Review

A portable air conditioner will solve your no-AC problem, and they don’t require any heavy lifting. The Global Air 10,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner not only cools average to large-sized rooms but also dehumidifies the air. The unit offers a fan-only mode, customized temperature control and an energy-saving sleep mode.

The filtration media is reusable and long-lasting, and you have the choice of using an optional odor-reducing filter. Global Air incorporated a safety mechanism to protect the compressor, so you can count on no-fault operation for years to come.

Excellent Coverage Area

Even in large new-construction homes, the size of the average living room is 393 square feet. Generating 10,000 BTUs of power, the Global Air Portable Air Conditioner is more than capable of cooling a space that size.

In rooms up to 400 square feet, the AC unit provides an even flow of cool air. The air outlet is located on the front of the AC’s housing to maximize the unit’s cooling efficiency. Its louvers are hand-adjustable in four directions, allowing you to point the airflow where you need it the most.

Self-Evaporative Dehumidification

The Global Air 10,000 BTU is a self-evaporative portable AC. As opposed to a reservoir you must manually empty, the air conditioner gets rid of the water through the vent hose. At most, the portable AC unit can extract 46.5 pints of water from the air each day.

If the room’s relative humidity is often high, you may need to release the overflow of water via the drain plug on the backside of the unit. An onboard LED indicator lets you know when manual drainage is necessary.

Three Onboard Cooling Modes

From the onboard control panel, you have three choices in terms of cooling modes. Cool mode lets you increase and decrease the temperature as you see fit. Fan mode allows you to run the fan without any cool air behind it.

Auto mode decides whether it’s best to run the fan or the AC. If the ambient temperature is above 77 degrees Fahrenheit, auto mode will start the air conditioner and adjust the temperature. An ambient temperature at or below 77 degrees causes the fan to kick on instead of the AC.

Other Onboard Functions

Cooling isn’t the only function available on the soft-touch control panel. The LED screen offers a view of the temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit, and you can toggle between low and high fan speed. If you don’t want the air conditioner to run constantly, you have the option of setting the timer up to 24 hours per cycle.

Remote Control Extras

The Global Air portable AC comes with a basic remote control. The remote allows you to choose a cooling mode and a fan speed as well as set a timer. You may also raise and lower the temperature; however, the remote has no display screen of its own that lets you see the temperature you’ve chosen. Two extra features are exclusive to the remote – a low speed, temperature-decreasing sleep mode and a high-speed, lowest-temperature max mode.

Compressor Protection

Out of all the components in an air conditioner, the most expensive to repair is a compressor – the part that circulates the AC’s refrigerant. Frozen condenser coils are among the most common causes of compressor malfunctions.

Luckily, Global Air added a 3-minute delay-start function to the air conditioner, so you won’t accidentally run the AC with frozen coils. However, if the compressor fails, Global Air warranties it for 3 years, so you’re covered either way.

Wide Exhaust Port

The portable air conditioner’s exhaust port contributes to the efficiency of the unit. The diameter of the outlet is wide, measuring 5.5 inches. This allows for a greater level of heat exhaust. It’s also easy to connect to the unit and the window kit thanks to the push-in-place rings and adapter.

Comparably Lightweight

A weight of 54 pounds may seem like a lot, but compared to similar models, the Global Air 10,000 BTU is lightweight. A set of four caster wheels on the bottom allow you to roll the unit with ease. The two ergonomic handles on the sides of the AC ensure it remains steady during transport.

A Reusable Filter

To protect the condenser, and subsequently the compressor, Global Air placed a filter in front of the air intake. Covered by an easily removable grille, the filter is rinsable, and it lasts for about a year as long as you clean it once every other week. Global air also offers a separately purchased carbon filter you can use in conjunction with the primary filter to rid the air of stale, unpleasant odors.

Straightforward Installation

Setting up the portable AC is a painless process. Besides the exhaust hose and its fittings, Global Air includes securing brackets and a two-piece adjustable slider in its installation kit. From unboxing to pressing start, cool air can be achieved in 15 minutes.

High Value, Low Cost

Dollar for dollar, this air conditioner has plenty of features. Auto mode and the timer allow you to enjoy a comfortable indoor temperature without constantly monitoring the AC unit. Setup is simple; the filter has a long lifespan, and there is no cumbersome water tank to dump. For the price, we were impressed by the compressor-protection feature and especially the number of BTUs.

There are a few features we would have loved to see on this portable air conditioner. While the louvers are adjustable, you must do it by hand – a remote function would add another level of convenience. The remote control does offer functions the control panel doesn’t, but the remote lacks a display screen. Therefore, you may have difficulty seeing the current temperature, depending on how far away you are from the unit.

Considering the price and the efficiency of the Global Air portable AC, we can live with these minor inconveniences. Overall, the value is unbeatable.
