How Do I Choose the Right Size Air Purifier?

This is the most common question asked about air purifiers. When it comes to picking out an air purifier, the size of the machine is crucial. If you buy one that’s too small for the room in which you plan to use it, you won’t get the full benefits that the purifier has to offer.

Often, manufacturers list the intended room size in the product’s specs. However, if this information is absent, you can determine the square feet the purifier can cover by multiplying the clean air delivery rate by 1.55, which is a formula created by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers.

The GermGuardian AC4825E Versus the Levoit LV-H132

These two air purifiers look great in any contemporary setting. With easy-to-use controls and a compact size, you’ll have no trouble operating, moving or placing either one. Both air purifiers use three levels of filtration to eliminate virtually all airborne contaminants from the room in which they are located.

Guardian Technologies’ GermGuardian 3-in-1 also offers an additional layer of protection in the form of an ultraviolet-C light. For a restful night’s sleep, you’ll appreciate the Levoit LV-H132 Air Purifier’s nightlight.

Both air purifiers require little energy to function, meaning your electricity bills won’t skyrocket. Another benefit that you’ll get from these air purification machines is their low maintenance costs. Plus, the purifiers’ clean air delivery rates fall right in line with their size. To tailor each machine’s purification strength to the room size and your health needs, you can easily change the fan speed to one of several settings.

Size and Placement

This 22-inch-high GermGuardian tower measures 7 inches wide and 10 inches deep, making it ideal for floor placement in an average-size room. On the rear of the machine, there is a recessed handle that makes it easy to carry the 7-pound purifier from one location to the next. It’s also designed to fit in with today’s appliances thanks to the air purifier’s matte black finish and silver chevron accent.

If you want an air purifier for personal use, the Levoit LV-H132 is an excellent choice. Standing 14 inches tall and measuring 9 inches in diameter, this cylindrical purifier is the perfect size to place on a desk or nightstand in a space as large as 86 square feet. It’s also lightweight at only 6.5 pounds. Like the GermGuardian AC4825E, this Levoit air purifier is designed in a modern style with its iridescent white casing.

Filters

At the heart of any quality air purifier, there is a genuine HEPA filter, and that’s exactly what you get with these purifiers by Guardian Technologies and Levoit. Both contain a true HEPA filter that traps 99.97 percent of dander, dust mites, mold spores and pollen as small as 0.3 microns. Each HEPA filter boasts a layer of activated carbon, which destroys pet, food and smoke odors.

While the GermGuardian’s large-particle pre-filter is integrated into the carbon-layered HEPA filter, the Levoit’s pre-filter is separate. However, both models only require filter changes twice per year. When it’s time to change the Levoit’s two filters, simply unscrew the bottom cap to access them. Once the filter change indicator illuminates on the GermGuardian purifier, press the lock tab to remove the back panel. Then, switch out the old filter for a new one.

Extras

Although a triple filtration system is enough to clean the air in a room, Guardian Technologies went one step further by adding an ultraviolet-C light to the mix. By pressing the UV-C button on top of the unit, the UV-C bulb interacts with the titanium dioxide photocatalyst to annihilate bacteria, mold, and viruses. UV-C light bulbs are only a few dollars, and each bulb lasts several years, so replacements are affordable no matter your budget.

While the Levoit LV-H132 Air Purifier doesn’t offer a UV-C option, it does have a bonus feature. If you push the button that depicts a light bulb, the machine’s blue nightlight will glow, creating a peaceful atmosphere for sleep and relaxation. Press the button again to change the light’s brightness level and a third time to turn off the light.

Fan and Efficiency

Both air purifiers are equipped with a three-speed fan, so you can control how much air is circulated through the expansive inlet and outlet. To select a fan speed on the 55-watt GermGuardian, all you have to do is turn a dial. On the highest fan speed, this purifier boasts a dust clean air delivery rate of 131 cubic feet per minute, a pollen CADR of 123 cfm and a smoke CADR of 112 cfm.

The 28-watt Levoit Compact model features a sleek touch panel that’s located along the rim of the unit. Numbered indicators next to the fan button confirm your fan speed selection. When on its maximum fan speed, the air purifier’s CADR measures at 40 cfm. For the machine’s size, the inlet and outlet are sizeable with the inlet fully encircling the purifier’s bottom half and the outlet running the perimeter of the top.

High-Quality Air Purification

Both the GermGuardian AC4825E and the Levoit Compact provide you with clean indoor air year round. Each one has three types of filters; therefore, almost no airborne contaminants will linger in the air. Plus, the GermGuardian contains a UV-C light for a double dose of germ-killing power.

Thanks to their nicely sized inlets and outlets, it doesn’t take long to circulate the room’s air.

You’ll enjoy the Levoit’s nightlight feature and touch controls. However, the simplicity of the GermGuardian’s dial and push button also have merit. The ability to change the fan speed is another positive in both purifiers’ favor, and the cost to maintain and operate each machine is incredibly low.

For air purification you can count on, you can’t go wrong whether you choose the GermGuardian AC4825E or the Levoit LV-H132 Air Purifier.

Air Recommended Air Purifiers

Our Pick Perfect for bedrooms, playrooms, and living rooms, the Coway Airmega AP-1512HH is one of the best-performing, most durable, and most economical purifiers we’ve tested.

Most Popular The Levoit Core 300 air purifier has some strong suits, but in our opinion it falls short of carving out a meaningful niche for itself. Its ideal use would be in a small bedroom occupied by someone who is sensitive to noise.

Also Great With high end air cleaning performance and a whisper quiet fan, the Winix 5500-2 is the perfect combination of power and finesse. It cleared airborne particulates out of our smokey testing room faster than any other model.

Best of the Best If you have a large space you want to remove irritants from, We recommend the Airmega 400S. All of Coway air purifiers do an excellent job of attacking indoor pollutants, and we highly recommend any of them. The 400S is designed to accommodate large room sizes.
