Dyson V11 Torque Drive Cordless Vacuum Cleaner Review

Cordless stick vacuums provide mobility that corded models can’t touch. When cordless stick vacs were new, the batteries that manufacturers used caused the suction to die when the charge was low. Today, the use of lithium-ion batteries solves that problem. Still, manufacturers have yet to make a vacuum that offers a running countdown of the battery life, that is, until Dyson invented the V11 Torque Drive.

The ultra-lightweight V11 Torque Drive boasts an impressive array of features, starting with its LCD info screen. A highly intuitive floor head can sense and self-adjust to the surface it’s on, and over two dozen mini cyclones separate dust particles with streamlined efficiency. For auto detailing, upholstery cleaning and staircase vacuuming, you can transform the stick vacuum into a handheld version in seconds.

Acoustic Digital Motor

Dyson uses a digital motor to power the V11 Torque Drive stick vacuum. This electromagnetic motor contains permanent magnets that generate precise rotation at a rapid speed of 125,000 rpm. Since the motor is brushless, it’s quieter than the typical stick vacuum.

To get the maximum benefit of the motor’s power, Dyson did not design the vacuum’s body in a way that forces the air to travel through angles. From the top of the gun-grip handle to the suction inlet in the floor nozzle, the air stream moves linearly.

Self-Adapting Floor Head

No feature was left out of the Torque Drive’s floor head. The rolling brush inside of the nozzle consists of a soft carbon-fiber material that resists static electricity and rows of nylon bristles that lift dirt with ease. This means the floor head is well-adept at cleaning bare floors and carpets alike.

On the head, there is a slider that decreases the suction when vacuuming delicate area rugs and increases it for tough cleanup jobs. When in auto mode, the floor head adjusts its height to the floor’s height to create a tight seal on surfaces. You’ll also appreciate how easy it is to slide out the rolling brush from the side of the nozzle when you need to clean it.

Three Vacuuming Modes

The auto mode we mentioned in the previous section is only one of three vacuuming modes to choose from on this stick vacuum. Auto mode is ideal for floor-type transitions and achieving a balance between the battery life and the suction strength.

If you need extra suction power, boost mode will give it to you. To prevent battery drain, boost mode increases the suction for 5 minutes a time, which is long enough to clean up excessive messes. Eco mode is the third option. In eco mode, the battery life is extended to its fullest.

An LCD Info Screen

Out of all its features, the LCD info screen is the V11 Torque Drive’s shining star. A quick touch of the trigger allows you to switch from the clocked battery-life countdown to the color-coded cleaning-mode screen. You’ll find that the countdown becomes more accurate over time. The screen also provides alerts in the language of your choice when there is a blockage, or the filter needs maintenance.

Under 10 Pounds

You won’t struggle under the weight of this vacuum cleaner. At 6.7 pounds, the Torque Drive is as light as a vacuum can be. It also requires minimal storage space since its floor head measures just 9.8 inches wide. When you want to vacuum your couch, stairs, car or windowsills, you can turn the stick vacuum into a convenient handheld version.

Five Accessories

Virtually all the tools you need to clean every surface in your home come with the V11 Torque Drive. With this vacuum cleaner, Dyson includes a small motorized tool and a combo brush-nozzle. Additionally, you get a crevice wand and two types of brushes. When you’re done vacuuming for the day, the wall-mounted dock offers a storage spot for each accessory.

An NCA Lithium-Ion Battery

Commonly found in electric cars due to its long lifespan and high energy level, Dyson brings the nickel cobalt aluminum oxide, or NCA, battery to the V11 vacuum. The seven-cell lithium-ion battery provides 1 hour’s worth of runtime per 4.5-hour charge when the Torque Drive is in eco mode.

To recharge the battery, simply rest it on the wall-mounted dock or plug in the adapter. If you’re conscious about your electricity usage, you’ll be happy to know that the battery stops drawing electricity as soon as it reaches a full charge.

HEPA Plus Multi-Cyclonic Filtration

No need to worry about airborne allergens when you vacuum with the Torque Drive. The stick vacuum contains a double-layered HEPA filter, which is rinsable and reusable. Additionally, a total of 14 cyclones collect and separate fine particles from larger ones at 79,000 grams-force.

Hands-Clean Dirt Bin

Like many bagless stick vacuums, the Torque Drive’s 0.2-gallon canister opens from the bottom instead of the top. To ensure that no dirt or dust lands on your hands or disperses into the air, a sliding shooter pushes the debris straight into the garbage can. The transparent plastic and the noticeable fill line prevent you from accidentally overloading the bin and clogging the vacuum cleaner.

Dyson Knocks It out of the Park

The list of positive features is long. The V11 Torque Drive’s brushless motor promises quiet performance. It has a dual-surface brushroll and a self-adjusting floor head. When you need a handheld vac, it doesn’t take much effort to turn the vacuum into one. There are plenty of accessories to use in handheld mode and a wall-mounted storage unit for them too.

Dyson V11

Of course, we can’t summarize our review without talking about the LCD screen once more. It’s just not a feature you can find in other stick-vac brands, and it’s user-friendly. There is also the filtration system, which includes a HEPA filter and 14 dust-separating cyclones.

With a maximum runtime of 1 hour, you can vacuum all the floors in your house before you need to recharge the lithium-ion battery. There are three suction modes, allowing you to tailor the stick vacuum’s performance to the task at hand. Although the dirt bin is small and the cleaning path is narrow, these two issues are a small price to pay for the vacuum’s lightweight feel. The Dyson V11 Torque Drive is truly revolutionary.
