The thought alone of scrubbing down my whole house’s floors and furniture by hand is enough to make my arms ache. Fortunately, help is at hand in the form of the Dupray Neat Steam Cleaner! This competitively priced model will help you blast away the grime using the refreshing power of hot steam. Read on for our full review!
The look
Opening up the box for the first time, you’ll notice that the body of the product is a sleek, white and vaguely modernist cube: an impassive angularity of plastic that seems to give away few secrets. Hiding on the underside is a wind-up reel for 5m (just over 16’) of power cord.
The reel is a nice feature which will prevent cord from straggling all over your cupboards. However, it’s a little annoying that it’s placed on the underside, as it means you have to turn the machine over every time you want to wind the power cable up.
The cleaner’s hose is 2m long, or 6’ 6” – that’s around equivalent to the height of basketball legend Michael Jordan. Imagine the former Chicago Bulls star shrinking to the thickness of a telegraph pole while still retaining his height, then coiling himself up like a snake: this will give you a good picture of the Dupray’s hose.
That’s a pretty good reach: if Michael Jordan can easily rise to those NBA hoops, you’ll have no problem getting to the high-up windows you’ve been meaning to clean.
The machine comes on smooth rolling wheels, and there’s a retractable handle for easy carrying.

Features
The Dupray has some nice design features. One is its built-in funnel, which allows you to easily pour in water, splash-free. The machine has a capacity of 54 oz. (1.6 liters), providing a decent 50 minutes of cleaning per refill.

A particularly popular aspect of the model is its ability to operate from run-of-the-mill tap water. Some steam cleaners only take distilled water, which needs to be bought separately. Of course, tap water contains minerals, and these will build up over time, meaning that the Dupray will need to be cleaned out.
That might sound like a hassle – but is it more of a hassle than needing to keep buying distilled water bottles? Personally, we find it easier to simply keep the machine in order (and Mother Earth would probably prefer that too).
There are a number of different endpieces that can be added to the hose: you can use the flat ‘vacuum cleaner’ shape, or the rounded ‘scrunched-up bath cap’ piece. The Dupray comes with a few of its own towels for wrapping around the ends.
However, once these are past their best, you can simply replace them with any household towel or cloth. It’s a relief that Dupray haven’t tried to make the model so that only their own bespoke pads fit, which is a trick that some manufacturers try to get away with.
The model also comes with some very strong bristle endpieces for giving the bath, tiles or sink a vigorous scrub. Finally, a fragrance disk is included for deodorizing purposes.
Performance
Now, a great-looking steam cleaner packed with features is all very well, I hear you say: but how well does it actually clean? Well, the Dupray performs its job very competently. The machine operates with steam at a temperature of around 275°F (135°C).
This is hotter than many equivalent brands. And the advantage isn’t just in more effectively blasting away dirt, germs and bacteria. Hotter steam is dryer, and the lower moisture content will be a boon to any soft furnishings that you’re cleaning (such as mattresses).
In general, the Dupray will do an excellent job on harder surfaces, such as those in the bathroom (including the grout between tiles), or on windows. Of course, cleaning softer surfaces is always more challenging, but this model should be a great help on furniture like sofas and chairs, as well as on beds.
The biggest challenge is going to come with carpets. Dupray does not advertise this machine as being suitable for deep-cleaning carpets, so it would not be fair to judge it accordingly. But that doesn’t mean it can’t help: the steam cleaner will be a great improvement on getting down on your knees to scrub any stains out.
All told, this machine does everything you could reasonably ask it to, considering its moderate price. So keep those arms from aching by picking up a Dupray Neat Steam Cleaner!
