What’s astounding about Bissell and Hoover is that while both are juggernauts in the carpet cleaning appliance game, they also offer super-inexpensive models for the average user. Today, we’re going to look at two such models—the Bissell 2085 and the Hoover FH50700—to see which of the two is the objectively better carpet cleaner.

Bissell 2085
DirtLifter PowerBrush
The Bissell 2085 comes with a Bissell DirtLifter Power Brush—a brush roll studded with four rows of stiff bristles that loosen and lift set-in stains. The bristles aren’t long enough to clean shaggy area rugs, but they work amazingly well on low- and medium-pile carpeting.
The DirtLifter PowerBrush spins rapidly to deliver strike after strike of effective carpeting cleaning action, leaving little to no residual stains in its wake. Combined with the powerful suction and your carpet shampoo of choice, the 2085 will prove more than reliable in eliminating old pet stains and odors.

EdgeSweep Bristles
Something that you won’t find in many carpet cleaners are side bristles. The 2085 comes with long, flexible bristles on both sides of the nozzle to help remove dust from furniture legs, along baseboards, and even in corners. This is a pretty handy add-on, considering the 2085, due to its low cost, doesn’t come with any bonus features or spot-cleaning tools.
Detachable Nozzle
After a thorough carpet cleaning session, you’ll need to rinse the DirtLifter PowerBrush to remove any bits of debris in between the bristles.
You can do this by detaching the nozzle and brush roll and running cold water into the bristles. Just make sure you dry the brush roll and nozzle thoroughly before connecting them back onto the 2085’s floorhead. It doesn’t have a self-cleaning tool, but manually rinsing the brush roll is pretty straightforward.

Dual-Tank System
Like the Hoover model, the 2085 uses a dual-tank system to store clean and dirty water separately. In both models, the clean tank is kept closer to the handle than the floorhead, so the risk of cross-contamination or dispensing dirty water back into your carpets is virtually nonexistent.
Both the clean and dirty water tanks are easily detachable, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble mixing a batch of your go-to carpet cleaning solution and rinsing out the dirty tank.

Compact Design
Finally, it’s important to note that the 2085, as well as the Hoover FH50700, are both super-compact models. They both have 0.5-gallon tanks, weigh under 13 pounds (dry weight), and hardly take up any space. However, the 2085 has a telescoping handle that doesn’t just raise and lower on demand, but also reduces overall storage space when you’re done cleaning.

Hoover FH50700
PowerSpin Pet Brush Roll
Inside the Hoover FH50700’s floorhead, you’ll find a red-and-white PowerSpin Pet Brush Tool, which Hoover claims is the perfect brush style for eliminating old pet stains as well as cleaning high-traffic areas.

The PowerSpin brush toll has two rows of extra-long, stiff bristles that dig deep into carpets and area rugs, removing old bits of debris and set-in stains effortlessly. According to some users, one or two passes is all it takes to get rid of soil stains, pet “surprises,” and foul smells from high-pile carpeting.
HeatForce Drying Power
One feature you probably wouldn’t expect from a carpet cleaner in this price bracket is HeatForce Drying Power. HeatForce delivers a constant gust of warm, dry air onto your carpets, allowing them to dry much more quickly than non-HeatForce carpet cleaners. By user estimates, it takes carpets just under 30 minutes to feel dry to the touch after a thorough washing and using HeatForce power.

On-Demand Solution Trigger
Similar to the 2080, the Hoover FH50700 has an on-demand solution trigger built into the curved handle. This allows you to dispense as little or as much cleaning solution on your carpets, depending on the severity of the stain.
Pressing the trigger multiple times with spray a concentrated stream of your go-to cleaning solution, after which the bristles will froth the detergent and loosen any debris from your carpet’s fibers.

Nozzle Cleanout Tool
One feature that separates the FH50700 from the Bissell is the nozzle cleanout tool. The FH50700 is a simple device that removes debris from in between the long bristles, leaving them perfectly clean and ready for round two. Make sure you use this tool after each use to extend the lifespan of the brush roll and to prevent cross contamination.

Excessive Loudness
Although the FH50700 is a fantastically powerful carpet cleaner for its price, it’s obnoxiously loud. This makes sense since it doesn’t have any soundproofing system built into the motor house or floorhead. If you can get past the loud buzz and sputtering noises when the clean water tank runs dry, you’ll love the FH50700 for its amazing cleaning capabilities.
- EASY TO USE: Lightweight & compact design for efficient cleaning and storage Plastic...
- POWERFUL CLEANING: Good for pet messes, high traffic areas, and small spaces
