As one of the leading manufactures in carpet cleaners, you can rest assured that any Bissell model you get is a winner. However, with so many to choose from, how can you tell which Bissell carpet cleaner is right for you? Today, we’re looking at two top-notch models—the Bissell 2085 and 2987—to see what each carpet cleaner has to offer.
Bissell 2085
3.4-Amp Motor
The Bissell 2085 is a lightweight yet heavy-duty carpet shampooer that does quick work out of seemingly impossible carpet-cleaning tasks. This 12-pound device sports a powerful 3.4-amp motor that, in conjunction with Bissell’s unique DirtLifter PowerBrush, delivers stroke after stroke in quick succession to thoroughly and permanently eliminate set-in stains.
DirtLifter PowerBrush with EdgeSweep Bristles
The DirtLifter PowerBrush comes with four rows of ultra-stiff bristles that attack stains at the roots, while the powerful suction picks up every last remnant of the stain in just one or two passes. On either side of the floorhead, you’ll find stiff side EdgeSweep Bristles used to clean along baseboards, around furniture legs, and corners.
Dual-Tank System
Like most carpet cleaners, the 2085 uses a dual-tank system that separates the clean water from dirty water. Such a system prevents cross-contamination between tanks, so users can rest easy knowing that the 2085, as well as the 2987, will never disperse dirty water back onto their floors.
The collective capacities of both tanks measure ½ gallons for the 2085 and 5/8 gallons for the 2987. How much cleaning you can do per tankful of water depends on the severity of the stains.
Removable Nozzle
Maintaining your 2085 couldn’t be easier, thanks to the detachable transparent nozzle that lets you access the brush roll and remove any bits of debris or strands of hair from the bristles. Simply detach the floorhead’s nozzle and run it under cold water, and you’re all set. According to users, the 2085 tends to clog rather easily, so make sure you thoroughly clean the brush roll after each cycle for the best carpet cleaning results.
20-Foot Power Cord
The 2085 comes with a 20-foot-long power cord that offers ample reach for cleaning wide carpets and shaggy area rugs. However, for homes with wall-to-wall carpeting, the 20-foot power cord can be quite limiting. The 2987 model’s cord is also the same length as the 2085, so if you need to extend your reach, feel free to plug your carpet cleaner into an extension cord.

Best Bissell Carpet Cleaners
Bissell 2987
DeepReach PowerBrush Roll
The 2987 uses a DeepReach PowerBrush Roll that also uses four rows of long, stiff bristles to deliver strike after strike to eliminate old, set-in stains once for all. The bristles are about twice the length of those on the 2085, so the 2987 can get rid of stains from the roots more quickly and easily.
Combine the DeepReach PowerBrush Roll with a more powerful motor, you’re looking at a hard-hitting carpet cleaner that suctions more debris per pass than the 2085. What this unit is lacking in size, it more than makes up for with enhanced suction and cleaning performance.
7.5-Inch Floorhead
The floorhead on the 2987 measures 7.5 inches from edge to edge. Compared to the 9.5-inch-wide 2085, it’s obvious that the 2987 will require more passes to clean wider floors. However, the benefit of having a narrower floorhead, especially one with EdgeSweep Side Brushes, is that it maneuvers more easily around obstacles like furniture legs.
13-Pound Design
The 2987 is heavier than the 2085 but only marginally. On empty water tanks, the 2987 weighs just about 13 pounds, so it certainly falls into the lightweight category, and it’s compact enough to store in closets until you need to whip it out for quick and easy carpet cleaning tasks.
The added weight of the 2987 comes from the larger dual-tank system, which can hold as much as 5/8 gallons of water collectively. A larger tank means longer cleaning sessions and wide surface area cleaning per refill.
No Above-Floor Cleaning Accessories
Something that shoppers should note about the 2987, as well as the 2085, is that this unit does not come with a suction nozzle and specialized above-floor cleaning tools. When it comes to getting rid of pet hair and old stains from upholstery, neither of these Bissell upright carpet cleaners are made for the task.
In fact, due to their affordable price tags, you won’t find very many premium features on either of these uprights. That’s not to say that they’re bad—in fact, if you want a simple carpet cleaner on a budget, these are arguably your best alternatives—but they don’t do much more than clean carpets and area rugs.
