Spot Cleaning is a process in which a certain spot – in this case, the upholstery on a certain piece of furniture, such as a couch – is cleaned by hand, without the use of any machinery. Most upholstery can only be cleaned through the use of spot cleaning.
This is why it is so important to find the right upholstery cleaner that will fulfill your needs when it comes to cleaning those pesky stains, and work well with the type of upholstery that you are cleaning.
In this buying guide, you’ll learn the key questions that you need to ask about what it is that you are cleaning so that you can make the right choice for you!

The Questions You Need To Ask
What Kind Of Upholstery Cleaner Does Your Furniture Require?
Not just any upholstery cleaner will do. Some furniture requires cleaners that are water-based, others require cleaners that have no water in them at all, and some furniture can’t be cleaned with any type of upholstery cleaner at all, or else it will damage the upholstery.
You can find this information on the label of your furniture, and if it’s not there, in the paperwork that came with it. However, if it’s not in either of those places, you can do a Google search, and the information can usually be found on the Amazon page.
How Much Upholstery Will You Be Cleaning?
If you’ll be cleaning a lot, or you know that you will need to clean a lot, then buying a bigger bottle is the way to go.
You can find these bigger bottles in various retail outlets, but one of the most cost-effective ways to buy them is by going online and purchasing them there. Sometimes, you can save as much as ten-to-fifteen dollars.
Naturally, if you won’t be cleaning that much, then you don’t need to buy as big a bottle.
How Old/New Are The Stains?
Some upholstery cleaners work best with older stains that have been there for a while. Some upholstery cleaners work best with newer stains that haven’t been there for very long.
If you are cleaning furniture that has stains from years ago, then you’ll need to purchase an upholstery cleaner that works well with those kinds of stains. Likewise, if you’re cleaning furniture with newer stains – or no stains at all, but you want to minimize the risk of long-lasting stains – then you’ll need to find an upholstery cleaner that works well with those kinds of stains.
What Kind Of Medium Do You Need This Upholstery Cleaner To Be?
Detergent and aerosol are the two primary mediums that upholstery cleaners come in. Some of them also come in the form of liquid sprays, and others in the form of foams and gels. Each one of these has its advantages and disadvantages.
Sprays are super easy to use. You simply spray and then dry it, simple as that. However, they don’t tend to be as effective as aerosols or detergents, in particular, because they are unable to destroy as many of the chemicals causing the stain thoroughly.
Foams and gels work best with thicker stains such as chunks of mud or dirt that have been lodged in the upholstery for quite some time. Most people use them for car upholstery, for that reason, and because the good foam and gel upholstery cleaners don’t fade or damage your car’s upholstery.
If you have small stains that haven’t been there for too long, sprays tend to work very well. Even on bigger stains, they work well, as long as they aren’t too old.
If you have bigger stains that are either relatively new or not too old – as in, not older than nine months to a year – aerosols work very well.
If you have any kind of stain, regardless of size or age, detergents always work very well, and they tend to be the most cost-effective. If you have thick and difficult to remove stains, foams and gels are the way to go, because other upholstery cleaners don’t clean them as well as foams and gels do.
Making The Right Choice
There are quite a few different options out there for upholstery cleaners. The best – and, arguably, only – way to find the right one is to ask yourself the questions outlined above, and to consider what it is that you are cleaning, the age and intensity of the stains, how much you’ll be cleaning, and the kind of medium that you’ll need this cleaner to be in.
